Dust jacket

A dust jacket, also known as a book jacket or dust wrapper, is a detachable outer cover for a book, usually made of paper and printed with text and illustrations. This cover has folded flaps that hold it to the front and back book covers. Traditionally, dust jackets were used to protect the book from dust and damage; however, they have evolved to serve as a marketing tool for the book, featuring the book’s title, author, ISBN, and sometimes a summary of the book’s content along with critical praise or reviews. Some dust jackets might also be made of more durable materials like plastic or laminated paper to increase their longevity and resistance to wear and tear. The design and material of a dust jacket can greatly contribute to the book’s visual appeal and can impact a consumer’s decision to purchase.
